Since August 13th 2026, we've implemented several requirements and restrictions on the use of generative AI (LLMs and TTI models) to our Content Rules.

We aim to make browsing Modrinth welcoming and easy, and ensure that human passion always has a place on our platform. To achieve this, we expect creators to be honest about their use of generative AI, and will not permit the upload of content that is entirely or primarily AI-generated.

This does not pertain to mob AI used by entities, such as pathfinding and brains, or scripts such as data generation. These policies target content (code and assets) created using generative AI.

We expect creators to be honest about the use of generative AI, as required by section 6.1 of Modrinth's Content Rules.

If AI has played a notable role in creating or publishing your content, it's important that users are aware of that, and we ask that you do not attempt to hide the nature of your content from users.

A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself, "if a human was in place of the AI tool, would they expect to be credited?"

For non-significant contributions, such as answering simple questions, reviewing code, checking grammar, refactoring a few functions, or filling in minor gaps for you, the answer is likely no. But if generative AI has generated assets, entire classes, translations, written your description, contributed a significant amount of content, or AI-generated output is the basis for your project, you must disclose how it has been used.

If the answer instead reveals that generative AI has played a role in your content worthy of being the primary developer, artist, or author, your content may not be suitable for Modrinth.

Primarily or fully AI-generated images may not be uploaded to any part of your Modrinth project page. This includes the project icon, gallery images, changelog, and description.

Modrinth may reject the upload of your image if the use of generative AI, including any edits using generative AI, is detected. Attempting to bypass this restriction to upload AI-generated content may result in the removal of images or account suspension.

While any use of deceptive editing to give a false impression of your content is strictly prohibited, AI-generated or AI-assisted images are inherently the most guilty of this and should never be used to replace screenshots or any other demonstration of in-game content.

The use of AI images for non-representative media such as icons, banners, and other branding assets is also prohibited.

While this may feel like a cheap shortcut to creating an icon for your projects, we've found that AI images are overwhelmingly unpopular in any context. It's expected that a crude photobash, a sloppy drawing made in Microsoft Paint, or no icon at all will perform better than an AI-generated icon!

Any project that is created entirely or almost entirely through the use of generative AI with little-to-no human input beyond prompting or testing cannot be published on Modrinth publicly.

Projects generated by AI pose several risks to our community and our users, and are not what our users come to and know Modrinth for.

Content that makes heavy use of generative AI in specific portions of a project may still be permitted if genuine human code/assets/writing makes up a significant portion of the project in another portion, so long as you are honest with your users about your usage of AI.

This regulation specifically targets projects that are created purely through "prompting and testing" with minimal or no real human-made content.

In most cases, such projects can still be made unlisted, but will be prohibited from appearing in public search results. We ask that you keep this in mind before attempting to publish any AI-generated content to Modrinth.

Modrinth aims to protect the community-driven and open-source nature of Minecraft projects. Regardless of generative AI's role, every project must abide by our content rules regarding creating sufficiently divergent forks.

We know that most creators are not comfortable with forks such as version or loader ports being mass-produced by users running their project through generative AI.

For this reason, forks are judged based on the original content added upon the source work. This means that a fork's "original" content may be prohibited from publication if it is primarily or entirely AI-generated, even if the source work does not make significant use of generative AI.

If a project you're forking makes substantial use of generative AI, we ask that you maintain disclosure of this use, unless your fork has removed all AI-generated content. You are welcome to clarify that AI-generated content is present in the source work if not added by yourself.

Likewise, if you have made substantial use of generative AI in your fork, but the source work does not, you will be required to clarify that AI-generated content is not present in the source work.

While concerns about the quality of content that generative AI currently produces do play a minor role, it is not the primary motivator for our regulations on AI-generated content.

Creators are welcome and encouraged to publish "bad" (subjective!) projects on Modrinth. Not only because everyone starts from somewhere, but also because being inclusive and welcoming everyone of every skill level is what makes up our community.

Using tools such as project templates or MCreator to help you get started on that journey, or to take you all the way to a million downloads, is welcome.

Generative AI has ethical, economic, and ecological concerns that we believe users deserve to be informed of if they cut AI-generated content out of their modding diet.

These concerns are elevated for fully AI-generated projects, which can be produced rapidly with extractive intent, without ever understanding our community or what makes modding so special.

These concerns are present whenever generative AI has been used in the production or publication of a project, even if that content may be subjectively "good."

Disclosing the usage of generative AI in your project has no negative impact on your project's place in search results or revenue. Please refer to our Rewards Program Information page for more details.
