If you get an error during the MinecraftProfile
step when signing in to your Minecraft account using Modrinth App, and that error is related to deserialization (whatever that fancy programmer word means), it's likely that you're signing in with the Microsoft account that doesn't have a Minecraft profile associated with it.
Minecraft authentication error: Failed to deserialize response to JSON during step MinecraftProfile: missing field `name` at line 5 column 1. Status Code: 404 Not Found Body: { "path" : "/minecraft/profile", "error" : "NOT_FOUND", "errorMessage" : "Not Found" }
Expected “Debug info” message.
⚠️ If the error says “error sending request for url (<url>)”, then it's a network problem on your end, not an account problem. Please check your Internet connection and try again.
Do you have the game license?
First and foremost, you must own the license to the game. Simply put, you must have either purchased the game or have a current subscription to PC Game Pass, which includes access to Minecraft.
If you don't have the license, then you will not be able to sign in to Modrinth App and play the game. We don't support piracy, sorry!
Have you launched Minecraft: Java Edition at least once?
If you have just purchased the game, subscribed to PC Game Pass, or have only played Minecraft: Bedrock Edition so far (welcome in, by the way!), you will need to launch Minecraft: Java Edition through the official Minecraft Launcher at least once to set up your profile.
Without doing this first, you will not be able to play through any of the third-party launchers, including Modrinth App.
Are you using the right email?
You may think you are, but so have many people who have contacted our support only to find out that no, they didn't use the right one.
Here are some of the methods that you can use to find the correct account:
Log out of Minecraft Launcher and log back in
Log out of Minecraft Launcher and log back in
It's almost like that one famous “have you tried turning it off and on again?” advice! But no, you see, when you log in to Minecraft Launcher, it displays the message “Welcome back, [gamertag]!”. This seemingly annoying message is the only time you will ever see the email associated with your Xbox account profile in Minecraft Launcher. Once you close it, it won't show anywhere else.
So, give it a try—log out, and then log back in. Then use the same email to sign in to Modrinth App. It should just work!
Find your email in Windows Settings (Microsoft Store only)
Find your email in Windows Settings (Microsoft Store only)
💡 This method only applies if you have a Microsoft Store flavor of Minecraft Launcher. It's downloaded from Microsoft Store, via the Xbox app, or using the new fancy installer from the official Minecraft website.
The easiest way to tell them apart is the icon color—the Microsoft Store flavor has a green creeper, whereas the Legacy one has a ‘sandy’ one.
When you sign in to Minecraft Launcher through the Xbox app, your account is automatically added to Windows, and you should be able to find it in Windows settings:
Good luck finding your account! ✨
