The app repeatedly asks to update

Why does the app ask to update itself to 0.8.8 after I've already updated it?

🪟 This article only applies to Modrinth App on Windows.

Explanation

In version 0.8.8, we've made two major changes to the app:

  1. We've switched to a different installer system. This means that the app can now be installed more reliably and without needing elevated permissions. This is great news for all users who experienced issues with the previous installer.

  2. We've updated the framework the app uses to a new major version. While this doesn't mean a lot to end-users, it should fix some bugs and make the app more stable.

Unfortunately, this update has had some issues. Specifically:

  • The switch to the new installer system also means that you now have two installations of Modrinth App on your system. One is for the older version, installed by Windows Installer, and the other is for the newer one, installed through our new installer.

We are aware of these issues and hope to fix them in the next update to the app.

Solution

For now, to stop the app from asking you to update, just delete the older version:

  1. Go to your Windows Apps and Features settings.

  2. Find the older version of Modrinth App (version 0.8.2 or earlier).

  3. Uninstall it.

Screenshot of Windows Settings with Installed Apps page open. It highlights a duplicate entry for Modrinth App of version 0.7.1, and shows Uninstall button hidden in the overflow menu right next to it.

You can also check that your shortcuts in the start menu and on the desktop point to the correct version of the desktop app.

This will solve the issue. If you need any more help, you can always contact us through the chat on the right of this page.
